The following organizations share the same commitment to our windward community as Kailua Canoe Club does.  Information about these programs and information on how to volunteer are below.

MANU ʻIWA KA MALANAI

Manu ‘Iwa O Ka Malanai is a grass roots community coalition that was formed in 2020 in response to the State’s Holomua Marine initiative (https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/holomua/). In 2021 DLNR  gave us the designation of being the Kailua “Makai Watch” team  (https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/makaiwatch/) to be the eyes and ears for DLNR of the ocean resources in Kailua and Ka’ohao.

We are preparing an application for a  Marine Management Area proposal to be established in Kailua for the DLNR which will be similar to the MMA’s found at Haunama, Waikiki and Pupukea-Waimaea. Our mission is “To honor the once-abundant fishing grounds of Kailua by incorporating Hawaiian ancestral values and modern science to restore the nearshore fishery while perpetuating Kailua’s fishing traditions.” We envision a clean safe ocean for future generations where fish are abundant and the ocean is clean and safe for our keiki.

We are seeking individuals and groups who share our aloha for Kailua Bay and want to be a part of restoring the health of the ecosystem. We feel paddlers are an important component and are honored to have Kailua Canoe Club support our efforts. Our broad initiatives are education, Hawaiian culture, mitigation of over use and sustainability. Our website can be found at manuiwa.org and there is a link there to a survey that you can take, which will be included in our Marine Management Area proposal. Mahalo for your interest!

Malama I ke kai a malama ke kai ia oe- Take care of the ocean and the ocean will take care of you.

HOʻOKUAʻĀINA

Ho‘okua‘āina is dedicated to cultivating individual well-being and community waiwai through aloha ‘āina. We host monthly community aloha ‘āina days, where volunteers have the opportunity to learn the traditional practice of cultivating kalo while forging meaningful connections to the land and each other—all while having fun in the mud! Every first Saturday of the month (second Saturday of the month starting in April), we welcome individuals, families, and small groups from the public to join us for a day in the lo‘i. These gatherings are a special way to engage with the ʻāina, strengthen community bonds, and contribute to something greater. Space is limited to 35 participants per workday, so be sure to sign up two weeks before when the registration form opens!

LAHAINA KŌKUA

He waʻa he moku, he moku he waʻa

A canoe is an island, an island is a canoe

Like the rest of Hawai’i and people around the world, the members and families of Kailua Canoe Club grieve the loss of life and community that has occurred on Maui. This unfathomable event has touched all of us, and we look to find ways that we can reach out and contribute in a way that best benefits the people of Maui. Many people have asked about what they can do to help individually that would have the biggest impact on the lives of our neighbor island sisters and brothers.

The Hawaii Community Foundation Maui Strong organization has developed a page for financial contributions. HCF is working with multiple non-profit agencies on Maui to best distribute the funds for community needs. They are providing financial resources that are deployed quickly, with a focus on rapid response and recovery.

We stand with our Maui ‘ohana. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they negotiate this long challenging journey. Me ke aloha pau‘ole.
